Can I Earn a Law Degree Online?

Updated March 22, 2017

With the ever-increasing popularity of distance learning. you might be wondering whether you can earn a law degree online. Actually, you can. Becoming a licensed attorney is a bit more difficult with an online law degree than with a traditional one, however.

What Are Online Law Degree Programs Like?

Online law degree programs generally take four years to complete. An academic year consists of 48 to 52 consecutive weeks.

Just as with traditional law school programs, online law schools have certain required courses and other electives which vary by school. Most online law school classes meet virtually for class discussions, and the Socratic method may even be used.

One big difference between traditional law degree programs and online degree programs is that many distance learning courses have more than just one large exam at the end of the course that determines a student s grade. This is more common in traditional law courses.

Can I Become a Lawyer With an Online Law Degree?

You must pass a state bar exam to become a licensed attorney and practice law. Most states – in fact, all but California – require bar exam candidates to be graduates of law schools accredited by the American Bar Association. Currently no online law degree program is accredited by the ABA, which means that graduates holding online law schools can t sit for the bar exam in any state except California.

But if you become licensed in California, you can then take the bar exam in Vermont or Wisconsin even if you attended an online law school. And at least one online law school grad successfully took on his state and was granted the right to take the bar exam there, so times are changing. Ross Mitchell, a graduate of online Concord Law School, convinced the Massachusetts Supreme Court to allow him to sit for the state bar exam in 2009.

Some states have reciprocity agreements that allow lawyers licensed in one state to practice in another state after a certain number of years. Usually you must practice law for at least five years before you can become eligible for reciprocity.

Is There Any Other Way I Can Practice With an Online Law Degree?

If you choose to practice only in federal courts, your California bar license would permit you to do that in any state. And some states allow those who hold Master of Laws degrees (LL.M.) to sit for the bar exam. This degree takes from one to two years to complete.

Are There Any Other Drawbacks to Earning an Online Law Degree?

Many legal employers still aren t fully on the distance learning bandwagon. The legal profession is reluctant to changes in long-standing traditions, so don t expect top law firms to be knocking down your door with job offers. That s not to say it can t happen, of course, but the odds would probably be against you as the holder of an online law degree. Of course, you can always hang out your shingle on your own as a solo practitioner.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about our online programs? Start your search for answers here.

The Academy first offered online classes in 2002. Since then, we have built a custom learning management system designed especially for the online delivery of art and design instruction. We regularly add new tools and features to support both students and instructors.

An online class contains written text, images, interactive technology, screen-capture and live-action video demonstrations, and other media elements. Weekly discussions occur via an online classroom that supports the easy submission of work. And every class is taught by a professional artist who provides feedback informed by industry standards.

The Academy prides itself on employing industry professionals. Many of our faculty members work for leading companies or have built successful art and design businesses of their own. The same flexibility that will allow you to take online classes allows them to teach while also remaining current on trends and practices in their disciplines.

For most assignments, you will submit digital files or images. (Certain classes require the occasional physical submission of work.) Your instructors may provide written feedback, visual markup with digital tools, or audio/video critiques.

Being a successful student does require a time commitment. For every three hours you spend online, you will probably spend at least six or seven hours on your artwork. But online classes allow you to work within your existing schedule.

Online classes at the Academy offer a lot of schedule flexibility. They follow the same semester calendar as onsite classes (typically 16 weeks during Fall and Spring semesters), but instead of going to class at specific times on specific days of the week, you are free to access course materials, participate in discussions, and submit work according to your own schedule, as long as you meet weekly due dates and other deadlines.

In order to access course materials, you just need a computer—PC or Mac—able to run a modern web browser. Certain computer-based disciplines, such as Game Development and Animation, require more powerful hardware.

The Academy has 24 degree-granting schools, most of which offer courses of study in multiple specializations, with fully accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees—and we are continually developing new programs. Almost every degree offered to onsite students is also available online. Degrees offered in various disciplines are AA, BA, BS, BFA, MA, and MFA, and we offer certificate programs in numerous disciplines as well.

How does Automotive Engineering differ from Mechanical Engineering? Where can I study for an Automotive Engineering Degree?

Please see also our answer to a previous question on a related subject

Q: I write from India; currently I am in my last year of pre-university schooling. I am very interested in engineering, and especially automobile engineering. I am really interested in designing automobiles. What are the top engineering schools in the world where I could pursue these interests?

Automotive engineering is an applied science that includes elements of Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering, and Safety engineering as applied to the manufacture and operation of automobiles, buses and trucks.(source: Answerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_engineering)

Mechanical engineering is a very broad field that involves the application of physical principles for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is made up of a number of subdisciplines concerned with the mechanics, kinematics (movement), and energy of physical objects. Practitioners of mechanical engineering, known as mechanical engineers, use principles such as heat, force, and the conservation of mass and energy in contributing to the design of vehicles and aircraft, heating cooling systems, buildings and bridges, industrial equipment and machinery, and much more. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_engineering)

There are many colleges and universities that offer courses specializing in the area of automotive. A mechanical engineering degree would give you the necessary educational background to work in the automotive, aerospace or commercial vehicle industry, and with vehicles being more computerized and electronic, you may also want to consider a degree in electrical engineering.

5 Challenges Hospital Administrators Must Overcome to Succeed in Today’s Rapidly Changing Industry

There’s no doubt a hospital administrator’s job is difficult and demanding, and it’s only getting tougher. As competition and expenses increase, hospital executives must prepare administrators to effectively lead during a time of transformational change in our healthcare system. Here are five challenges they must overcome in order to successfully improve patient care while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

    Compete for healthcare professionals

There is a real shortage of healthcare professionals, and it’s hurting the profitability of hospitals as they pay more for every employee they hire. From 2008 and 2018, healthcare employment will grow by 23 percent, compared to only 9 percent in all other employment sectors, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. During that time, hospitals will be forced to compete for:

    • Registered nurses (expected to grow 22.2 percent)
    • Licensed practice and licensed vocational nurses (expected to grow by 20.7 percent)
    • Home health aides (expected to grow by 50 percent)
    • Nursing aids, orderlies and attendants (expected to grow by 18.8 percent)
    • Physicians and surgeons (expected to grow by 21.8 percent)

With this in mind, hospital administrators must put a plan in place to address the shortage and compete for the best employees. As they compete, they must be skilled at recruiting, hiring and retaining qualified healthcare professionals. Hospital administrators need to build strong relationships with schools that offer healthcare-related degrees in their local communities and across the nation. Additionally, they must make working at their hospital attractive, which means thinking beyond competitive pay and benefits to ensuring each individual employee feels connected to the hospital and has a passion for working for the organization.

    Specialize for growth

With the rapid growth of specialty hospitals, physician-run outpatient surgery centers and diagnostic centers, traditional hospitals are facing increased competition. To compete for patients, hospital administrators must be prepared to set their hospitals apart through a specialized care strategy. Benchmarking best practices is essential; hospital administrators must take time to investigate other specialty healthcare providers in their local communities, identify areas of opportunity and put a strategic plan in place for building renowned specialty practices. During this process, they typically take numerous factors into consideration, including local demographics and competitors’ areas of specialization. With a specialization strategy solidified, hospital administrators must focus their efforts on recruiting specialized personnel and building a local reputation for excellence for the practice area.

    Prepare for the future
As America’s 78 million baby boomers come of age, hospitals are feeling the pressure to expand to meet growing demand. At the same time, hospitals are facing changes in the way they are paid. Reimbursements are shifting from a fee-for-service model to a model that is based on outcomes and overall quality of care.

When patient satisfaction plays a role in the way hospitals are paid, you can bet hospital administrators are making it a priority. Therefore, hospitals are conducting extensive market research to ensure their expansion efforts are aligned with what consumers expect. For example, with the knowledge that women make most healthcare decisions in a family, one hospital decided to build an 18,000-square-foot imaging center for women with a spa-like atmosphere and robes. One children’s rehabilitation hospital built a massive facility that comes complete with therapeutic gardens, play areas and even an all-grades school for inpatients. Other hospitals are converting semi-private rooms into private rooms, and there is a great deal of emphasis on making them safe, comfortable and cozy.

Having modern facilities with up-to-date medical equipment is crucial for hospitals that are competing for patients. With this in mind, hospital administrators must be prepared to balance current financial strain while positioning for the future.

    Improve patient care through technology
There’s not a corner or crevice of healthcare that is not being affected somehow by technology. Medical providers throughout the country, for instance, are spending millions of dollars on electronic medical record systems that allow physicianss and hospitals to seamlessly share patient information.

Ensuring that EMRs are effectively implemented within the healthcare organization is a critical role of healthcare administrators. However, technology is not exclusive to EMRs. Healthcare administrators need broad-based skills to integrate information and make evidence-based decisions. From electronic communication to order entry systems to the most advanced imaging technology, even the best technology is no good unless it’s applied to improving organizational and patient outcomes.

Hospital administrators are responsible for making sure hospitals operate efficiently and provide quality medical care to patients. As a result, they must keep up with advances in medicine, technology and government regulations and policy changes.

    Managing Medicare and Medicaid
With record numbers of unemployed people across the nation, the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans continues to grow. Now, more than ever, healthcare administrators are challenged with providing healthcare services to these patients while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Couple this problem with the caps on government reimbursements for Medicare and Medicaid patients, and hospital administrators have, arguably, the biggest hurdle ahead of them — providing healthcare services to an aging population that relies on Medicare for their healthcare needs.

Healthcare administrators must find ways to offset these expenses, while expanding their healthcare services in areas where they can serve more patients.

    Early Childhood Teacher Education

What is Early Childhood Teacher Education?

Early Childhood teachers work with young children aged 0 – 5 years old in kindergartens, preschools, and other similar early childhood centres. As an Early Childhood teacher you have the chance to teach kids when they are most open to learning. You might inspire their imaginations through building blocks, play dough or puzzles and the next day teach social skills and cooperation with group activities like gardening, playing musical instruments or preparing a meal. You’ll have fun playing and laughing with kids, knowing that no two days are ever the same.

You’ll provide support for families with parenting and care giving. And through guided play you can help children gain the skills they need for healthy intellectual, emotional and physical development. It’s a very challenging and satisfying career where you can make a real difference in children’s lives.

Is Early Childhood Teaching for me?

    Early Childhood Teacher Education students:

    • Are interested in working with infants, young children, and their communities
    • Are patient and creative
    • Love having fun with play dough, musical instruments, gardening and craft
    • Are good at communicating
    • Enjoy story time
    • Are passionate about nurturing and cultivating a love of learning in others.

Some students go straight into teacher education after secondary school because they love working with young children while other students start their studies after having their own children and realising the importance of early childhood education on young children’s development.
If you love young kids and want to make a difference in their lives, read on to find out more about taking this programme at UC.

What and how will I learn at UC?

You’ll learn about the theory, practice and management of teaching, including the place and role of education, the characteristics of learners and the teaching-learning process. You’ll also learn about Te Whāriki, the curriculum taught in Early Childhood, to prepare you for the profession of teaching.

You will spend numerous weeks working in a centre where you can trial and refine your planning, teaching and management skills. By the end of your time at UC you will have learnt all the teaching skills required to teach Early Childhood education in New Zealand.

There are three qualification pathways for Early Childhood Teaching at UC:

Successful completion of any of these pathways lead to eligibility to apply for NZTC registration. However, there are differences in the duration, focus and qualification awarded. Specifically, the BTchLn is a three-year undergraduate programme whilst both the GradDipTchg and the MTchgLn are one-year programmes for those with a Bachelor degree. Below is a quick overview of the differences between the the GradDipTchg and the MTchgLn programmes.

    * These are domestic fees are for 2017.

Why study Early Childhood at UC

All you ever wanted to know about Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse and Bachelor of Science In Nursing

Introduction to LPN to RN Online Programs

OnlineLPNtoRN has various resources for students who are interested in becoming registered nurses. LPN, or licensed practical nurse, work under registered nurses (RN) and other healthcare professionals in order to help take care of recovering or sick patients. Becoming a LPN, or licensed vocational nurse in Texas and California, is often the first step in a career in nursing.

The bridge program covers the gap between the educational requirements of LPNs and RNs. It also provides you with an understanding of nursing theory, nursing science, patient care methods, nursing pharmacology and professional nursing practice.

Achieve Test Prep LPNs earn an RN license in half the time and cost of traditional programs. The convenient, instructor led test-out program from Achieve Test Prep allows you to learn at an accelerated pace and earn college credit-by-examination which then is eligible to be transferred to an ACEN accredited nursing school or 100’s of universities nationwide.

Kaplan University While Kaplan University does not offer LPN to RN programs, it does have several programs for registered nurses who want to take their careers further. RNs can pursue either a bachelor or master degree or they can choose to specialize in Nurse Administration or Education .

Description of Online LPN to RN Degree Programs

Today there are many distance-learning options for LPN to RN degree programs. These are bridge programs for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to receive a Registered Nurse (RN) degree. Since LPN education takes less time and money than RN education, it’s common for people to get that degree first. Unfortunately though, it has limited job and career advancement opportunities. This is why online LPN to RN degree programs are an ideal solution. They make it possible for you to continue your LPN career while obtaining a RN degree. You’ll be required to complete general education courses in communication, sociology, history and mathematics to qualify for a RN degree. There are a few options you can obtain an RN through, including:

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN): This is the most common initial nursing education for all registered nurses. It’s a 2-3 year program that provides entry-level education requirements to practice as a RN. As a graduate of an ADN program you would be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and receive a RN license after passing the exam. Usually an online LPN to RN program can take as little as 18 months to complete. It’s a good option for those who don’t have a ton of time to spend on a more advanced education.

Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN Degree): BSN degrees are 4-year programs that provide the basic level of education to practice as an RN. This is a more advanced degree than an ADN and can offer better benefits. Usually graduates of BSN programs have better career opportunities than graduates of ADN programs. They also have the ability to achieve specialty certification and have the educational foundation for future nursing graduate studies or healthcare administration. Courses are offered through the BSN that aren’t available through an ADN program. Leadership and management, community health nursing, risk reduction, and disease management are a few examples of courses offered.

Online programs are unique. They offer you the ability to get a higher degree while still maintaining a full-time work schedule. The top five reasons to choose an online LPN to RN program include:

    • Gain a degree through a prestigious accredited university
    • No classroom attendance required
    • Flexibility in part-time or full-time enrollment, tests, and classroom activities
    • Find lower costs for the same education that is offered at traditional universities
    • Learn at your place, at your own pace

Career Advancements through Online LPN to RN Programs

There are many benefits to your nursing career if you choose to participate in an LPN to RN degree program. First of all, after becoming an RN you will be able to take on more responsibility, receive a higher pay, and find jobs in a wider range of medical facilities. RNs are more involved in treating patients than LPNs. RNs also have some leeway to specialize in certain types of treatment and work at specialty facilities. Currently RNs are the most employed nurses across the nation. Through this program you can explore many options of employment since you will be high in demand.

Additionally, becoming a RN will provide you with a large pay increase from your current LPN salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. the median salary for RNs in May 2008 was $62,450, about 30% higher than that of LPNs, which was only $39,030. The number of available jobs for RNs is also supposed to increase by 22% by 2018. This means the likelihood is high that there will be jobs available when you graduate from your LPN to RN nursing program. For more information about the financial benefits of becoming an RN, you can check out The Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational employment and wages page for RNs as well as the Health Resources and Services Administration page that offers governmental information on nurse training and careers.

What are Program Admission Requirements for LPN to RN Degrees?

For program admission you first must be a previously certified LPN or LVN (licensed vocational nurse) to get into a LPN to RN bridge program. You should also have experience as a LPN or be currently employed in a LPN position. A high school diploma or GED is also a requirement. Nursing school entrance exams, CPR certification, and criminal backgrounds checks are often common requirements for admission. The following are examples of entrance nursing exams for LPN to RN programs:

    • Pre-Admission Exam for RN students (PAX-RN): This test is developed and delivered through the National League for Nursing (NLN). The exam is broken down into 3 major parts: verbal, science, and math skills.
    • Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) exam: The HESI specialty exams were developed to assess students knowledge and their ability to apply nursing concepts within specific content areas. The exams are grounded in classical test theory and critical thinking theory.
    • Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS): This exam includes 4 major parts: reading, math, English, science.

In addition to the above requirements many schools encourage you to have a GPA of 2.5 or higher in previous programs of study. They also often require letters of recommendation from previous employees and professors, a complete resume or curriculum vitae, and a personal essay that addresses the reasons why you want to obtain an RN degree. There may be additional admission requirements than this depending on the online program you choose.

What are Accredited LPN to RN Degree Programs?

In the United States different schools are accredited based on the quality of education an institution offers. It’s important for you to select an online LPN to RN program that has been accredited. In order for colleges and universities to become accredited they must be evaluated on their governance and administration, financial stability, admissions and student services, institutional resources, student learning, institutional effectiveness, and relationships with internal and external constituencies. Accrediting agencies follow guidelines that are set by the U.S. federal government.

The reason you must attend an accredited online program is because there are many hoaxes out there, or organizations that just want your money. If you go to an accredited school you’re guaranteed a quality education and you’ll get your money’s worth. Additionally, for you to qualify for financial aid on a federal level, the institution you’re accepted to must be accredited by an accrediting agency that is recognized by the federal government. Accreditation ensures that the level of education you receive meets certain criteria and standards. You’ll also be able to transfer to another school only if your previous classroom credits have the level of quality that accreditation assures. Also, as a graduate of an accredited nursing school you have the opportunity to attend other schools offering advanced studies, including MSN and Doctorate programs. Prospective employers will also look for accreditation, especially in a serious field such as nursing. Without attending an accredited school you could risk your future employment.

To assure that programs are accredited you can search for them on the U.S. Department of Education website. and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). CHEA is a private, nonprofit national organization that coordinates accreditation activity in the United States. They serve as the primary national voice for voluntary accreditation and quality assurance to the U.S. Congress and U.S. Department of Education.
