      Major in Criminal Justice

      The following requirements must be fulfilled for a total of 42 credits:

      1. The general requirements stated in the GW Bulletin under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences .
      2. Prerequisite Courses (6 credits) – SOC 1001 or 1002, and SOC 1003.
      3. Required Courses (21 credits) – SOC 2101, 2102, 2135, 2136, 2145, 4192 (6 credits).
      4. Elective Courses (15 credits) – Five courses chosen from SOC 2137, 2139, 2146, 2167, 2177, 2178, 2184, 2189; PSYC 2011, 3154; FORS 2104; ANTH 3513; HIST 3370; PSC 2213, 2215, 2217 (or PPPA 2217); ECON 2167. Note: At least one sociology course and at least one non-sociology course must be taken. SOC 2101 and 2102 should be taken by the junior year. Check to make sure prerequisites are met (e.g. FORS 2104 requires two labs as prereqs).

      Minor in Criminal Justice

      The following requirements must be fulfilled for a total of 18 credits:

      1. The general requirements stated in the GW Bulletin under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences .
      2. Prerequisite Courses (6 credits) – SOC 1001 or 1002, and SOC 1003.
      3. Required Courses (6 credits) – SOC 2136, 2145.
      4. Electives Courses (6 credits) – SOC 2135, 2137, 2139, 2167, 2178, 2184, 2189; PSYC 2011, 3154; FORS 2104; ANTH 3513; HIST 3370; PSC 2213, 2215; ECON 2167. Note: At least one elective must be a sociology course.

      Students are required to earn a grade of C– or better in any required course. If a student receives a grade of D+, D, or D–, the student may either (1) repeat the course, in which case the grade in the repeated course must be no lower than a C–, and grades for both the original and repeated courses will appear on the student’s transcript; or (2) take a 1000-level course in the same department, in addition to the minimum number of courses required for the major, and receive a grade no lower than C–. Option 1 must be approved by the department chair in writing before the student may register for a course a second time.

      Florida State University Panama City will honor its newest graduates at a commencement ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at the Marina Civic Center in Panama City, Fla.

      This April, 23 area middle and high school girls celebrated the completion of their curriculum in computer science for the future. These young women began their journey with the Girls Who Code (GWC) club six months ago, the second group to go through the program.

      High School Education Takes On a Global Dimension (Transcript)

      Paul: Hey, good morning, Matthew, can you hear me fine?

      Narrator: It’s 7:30 on the north side of Chicago.

      Paul: Okay, we’re mostly here. We’re missing a couple of people.

      Narrator: And for Walter Payton High School’s championship math team, it’s time for donuts–

      Student: I prefer it with jelly.

      Narrator: And distance learning.

      Matthew: You can start with an integer like two–

      Narrator: A Q and A with a mathematician in Switzerland.

      Matthew: There’s an infinite number of integers, so there are an infinite possible number of states, and this turns out to be how you can store an arbitrary amount of information.

      Paul: Matt Cook really is one of the world experts in this field. And so this is an opportunity for them to interact with somebody who’s actually doing research in the area that we’re talking about, and that’s really neat.

      Narrator: At this science math and world language magnet, every subject seems to have a global dimension.

      Paul: Conceivably, if every city is connected to every other city, like, one obvious algorithm here is void segment C, D.

      In a single day, we could talk about math problems from China, which is how I introduced one of my units in trigonometry. Geometry problems from Japan, computation problems from France, I mean, the possibilities are really endless.

      Ellen: Payton began with a vision that, by putting together a great faculty of teachers who had the desire to nurture global leaders, we would be able to create a curriculum and programs to set us apart from any other high school in the nation.

      Narrator: One distinguishing factor is Payton’s requirement of four years of foreign language study. Offerings include Spanish, French, Mandarin and Japanese.

      Language acquisition is a profound thing, because when you learn another language, you learn the way other people think. You are really learning to keep several points of view in mind. It’s important to have more than one perspective, now more than ever.

      Jeremy: My friends and my family, they’re very much happy to see me try to learn these languages, because they are quite difficult. At the same time, they’re quite fun, and I’m learning so much about foreign countries and about foreign affairs, just based on taking Japanese for a couple of years.

      Narrator: The school plays host to a steady stream of visitors.

      Ellen: Good morning, and welcome to Walter Payton College Prep.

      Narrator: Like this delegation of 25 Chinese Mayors.

      Ellen: You are in a wonderful, wonderful city right now, the City of Chicago, the city of immigrants.

      Narrator: This group gathered at The Confucius Institute, a resource center at Payton, funded through a partnership between the Chinese government and the city of Chicago.

      Ellen: We’re very proud to host the Confucius Institute and to give a global perspective to our school.

      Robert: We really want to make sure Chicago is at the forefront of Chinese people’s minds, when they’re thinking about the United States. So we teach our children, not only the language, but we teach them the Chinese culture, and that’s going to create a strong foundation for the city, so that more and more business and cultural exchanges can go on in the future.

      Narrator: Chicago has the largest Chinese language program in the United States, with more than 6,000 students studying Chinese in 28 schools.

      I have to make it fun and easy, and then also at the same time, they have to feel like they are– they’re learning a lot.

      And then make them laugh, and I try to make them laugh every day, so that they think, oh, it’s not boring, and then, when they like it, they’ll do well.

      Robert: We have many, many students who are recent immigrants from Mexico, and they all speak Spanish at home, and they are learning Chinese and English at the same time, so essentially, these kids will go through 13 years of education, where they’re learning English, Spanish and Chinese, and they will come out pretty much as the most marketable students in the United States.

      Teacher: Good. Are we ready? And..

      Narrator: Technology plays a key role here, from tools to create rap videos in French..

      Doctor: So it doesn’t cut through the aorta.

      Narrator: To this health class where students interact with doctors performing open heart surgery at a Southside hospital.

      Teacher: What about Walter Payton, do you guys have any questions?

      Student: Doctor, I was just curious. How would this surgery differ if somebody had already had a bypass surgery?

      Doctor: That’s a good question. Fundamentally it’s the same operation, you know, that–

      Narrator: The same technology has facilitated face-to-face encounters with students in several sister schools.

      Student: I’d love to give you some information about my school–

      Ellen: We connect with an all Islamic Intercity school in Casa Blanca, Morocco, a school in Osaka, Japan, we have sister schools in Concepcion, Chile, and in China. And a school in Durban, South Africa.

      Student: I want you to play me something.

      Luis: It’s amazing, I mean, to see our students’ reaction when they get so see someone from South Africa, from Morocco, and even though they are so far, and they speak another language, they still do the same thing, they still like going to movies, they still like dancing, they still sing and they’re teenagers.

      Narrator: Most students prefer real world exchanges to virtual ones, and by raising their own funds, all students have the opportunity to travel abroad.

      Grace: When we were in France, all the things said, Coiffeur, on it. I think that’s–

      Narrator: French student, Grace Stome, visited Strasbourg, France, and spent a week in Morocco.

      Grace: The second the plane touched the ground, we knew this was going to be way more than we could ever expect, a great experience. Everyone there was so hospitable and welcoming. We met all these dignitaries but that was– while that was nice, it was even better to get to spend time with the kids and talk to them, and go to their classes, and go home with them on home stays. We wanted to speak French with them, but they said, no, no, let us speak English. We want to show you how we can speak English, and it was just an eye opening experience that I’ll never forget.

      Robert: Educators should always be looking at how can we open more doors for students. I find that when you open those doors, and when you expand those horizons, you never can close them, and that’s going to change these students’ lives, and their families’ lives and their communities lives forever.

      I loved this video and the innovative ideas it presents. I wonder if Peyton Prep School would have an online teaching position for me. I have credentials for English and Social Sciences. I have worked with AVID for 5 years.
      I think that as educators we must embrace the authenticity and relevance of such programs if we are to educate all of our students.

I really enjoyed especially the virtual interaction with teachers and students from around the world.       Neuropsychiatry: the Interface Area of Psychiatry and Neurology

      What is Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology?

      Neuropsychiatry involves the interface area of psychiatry and neurology. This is a specialist medical discipline involving the behavioral or psychological difficulties associated with known or suspected neurological conditions such as epilepsy, head injury, attention deficit disorder, dementia, tardive dyskinesia, atypical spells, irritability and any organic mental disorder. Technically, Neuropsychiatry concentrates on the abnormalities in those areas of higher brain function such as the cerebral cortex and limbic system. Sometimes difficult to treat psychological or psychiatric conditions. including problems relating to medication. are related to these areas.

      The subspecialty of neuropsychiatry is the neurological aspects of psychiatry and the psychiatric aspects of neurology. All neuropsychiatric patients invariably have a psychiatric aspect as well as a higher brain neurological facet.

      Neuropsychiatry, now used synonymously with Behavioral Neurology, is the medical subspecialty dealing with the evaluation and management of higher brain functions (cerebral cortex and limbic system).

      Although Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology are regarded as the same specialty, the primary initial specialty directions may be different. (Neuropsychiatrists may come to this specialty through psychiatry, Behavioral Neurologists through Neurology). Because of the highly specialized nature of this specialty, there was technically no board certification in this area until late 2006. This changed when the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) introduced Subspecialty Certification of Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry. (BPNP). These two specialties by so doing merged into one. psychiatrists specialize in these behavioral facets as do behavioral neurologists whose discipline is similar. The term Neuropsychiatrist and Behavioral Neurologist should be restricted to those with psychiatric training and special background training in the psychopathology of the cerebral cortex.

      A training in Neurology and in Psychiatry alone does not make one a neuropsychiatrist / behavioral neurologist.

      One method of training today would be a full four year residency in one or both of Psychiatry or Neurology and then an added Fellowship program e.g. of two years.

      Historical Landmarks in Neuropsychiatry in the USA

      Dr Vernon M. Neppe MD, PhD, founded the first Division of Neuropsychiatry in a Department of Psychiatry in the USA in 1986 (at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle, WA). He directed this division till 1992, offering also specialized medical student, residency and fellowship rotations in Neuropsychiatry. Dr Neppe was recruited from overseas (South Africa) by the then Chairman of Psychiatry, Gary J. Tucker MD, after a national search had failed. Dr Neppe had previously effectively done what may have been the first unofficial “Fellowship” in Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology (1982-1983) at Cornell University Medical Center (White Plains, and Manhattan, NY).

      Dr. Neppe then founded the Pacific Neuropsychiatric Institute in 1992 (pni.org). This became the first private institute dealing with the area of Neuropsychiatry specifically. The PNI was developed as a model neuropsychiatric and behavioral neurological institute, clinically involving extremely detailed sequential consultations and testing plus detailed analyses of psychopharmacogical elements. The PNI focuses, as well, on research (with the development of numerous questionnaires and tests) and education. Amongst the most important for this subdiscipline are the BROCAS SCAN. the SOBIN and the INSET. which are tests that Dr Neppe has developed and modified over the past two decades and are still in the process of research. The BROCAS SCAN is an examination of higher brain function, the SOBIN and the INSET are structured closed ended and with amplification open ended historical measures of current and past symptoms and signs of neuropsychiatric relevance.

      The American Neuropsychiatric Association was established in 1988. It is an organization of professionals in neuropsychiatry and clinical neurosciences (not necessarily MDs) dedicated to understanding the links between neuroscience and behavior, and to developing effective diagnosis and treatment for patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. The ANPA members work together in a collegial and interdisciplinary fashion to: advance knowledge of brain-behavior relations; provide a forum for learning; and promote excellent, scientific and compassionate patient care. The interdisciplinary nature of the membership encourages collaborations in research presentations, symposia, workshops and/or continuing education courses. The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences is the official publication of the organization, and is a benefit of membership. ANPA was the brainchild of two neuropsychiatrists, Barry Fogel, M.D. and Randolph B. Schiffer, M.D.

      There was an indirect label of Neuropsychiatrist previously through the AMA: In late 2003, the AMA recognized Neuropsychiatry as an official subspecialty of Psychiatry. Apparently the first MD so listed was Dr Vernon Neppe.

      Over the past few years we are seeing an increasing number of Fellowships in Neuropsychiatry/ Behavioral Neurology which the UCNS are certifying. An early Fellowship program was offered at the University of Washington in the Division of Neuropsychiatry.

      In 2006, the People to People Ambassador program had the first delegation in Neuropsychiatry (and Psychopharmacology).
      This was a very successful delegation to China. This delegation was led by Dr Vernon Neppe.

      Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry (BN NP) taken together is now a recognized official subspecialty certified by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. (UCNS ). The first examination was administered in Sept 2006.
      This certification allows an official subspecialty board certification label. The criteria for admission to this examination are rather stringent and the examination requires a high level of specialized knowledge. The first graduating group of about fifty (including Dr Neppe) can use the official abbreviation for this subcertification, namely BN NP. A major advance is this recognition of BN NP as a subspecialty of Neurology.

      Special education teachers continue to be in high demand across the country. Highly skilled, well trained teachers with a devotion to helping children and adults with special needs fill a vital role in our educational system. Without them, many students would be denied the chance to achieve their full potential. Becoming a special education teacher is a noble calling which brings many challenges. Chief among those challenges, is finding the funding to pay for college.

      Like all students pursuing careers in teaching, those majoring in special education face tuition costs that are always on the rise. Luckily, there are a wide range of scholarship opportunities dedicated to helping motivated college students meet the costs of their post-secondary education. Just as most special education majors will specialize in a particular field, many of the available scholarships will be directly linked to specific special needs. Some scholarships may be dedicated to students who are planning to work with the physically challenged, while others may target those special ed majors who intend to work with the cognitively disabled. There are even scholarships devoted to special education majors who will be working with adult students who face special educational challenges.

      While not strictly a scholarship, the Federal TEACH Grant provides financial aid to students pursuing a career in teaching. The TEACH Grant is an award-for-service program which offers up to $4000 per year to student who are continuing, or completing, the course work needed to become a certified teacher. Special emphasis is given to those student applicants who are specializing in high need fields such as special education. In return for funding, students must agree to a predetermined term of service teaching in a critical need facility or high need education field.

      State Supported Scholarships

      Just as the Federal TEACH Grant works to address the shortage of qualified teachers across the country, many state governments have devised their own scholarship programs to encourage students to pursue teaching careers within their respective states. These scholarships are often award-for-service programs that require recipients to remain in the state and teach at a state certified school for a predetermined period of time. Every state will offer different levels of financial aid for students pursuing careers as special education teachers, and students are encouraged to contact their state s Department of Higher Education to learn about specific programs.

      The following examples of state supported scholarships for special education majors will give students an idea of what may be available to them at the state level.

      • The Illinois Student Assistance Commission administers the state s Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver Program for resident students enrolled in a special education teaching program at an accredited Illinois college or university. While not a scholarship per se, the program offers full tuition waivers for up to four years of study in preparation for a career as a special education teacher. This is an award-for-service program, and recipients are required to sign a contract agreeing to teach within the state of Illinois for a predetermined period following graduation and certification.
      • The Indiana Commission for Higher Education administers the Minority Teacher and Special Education Services Scholarship. The program offers up to $1000 in annual scholarship awards to resident students enrolled in a special education teaching program at a participating state college or university.
      • The College Foundation of North Carolina offers a variety of scholarships and loans for students pursuing careers as educators. The Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship Loan Fund provides two year scholarship loans of $6500 for college juniors or seniors enrolled in a teacher preparation program at a state college or university. To be eligible students must agree to become certified in math, science or special education, and must agree to a minimum of three years service within the North Carolina education system. Recipients who fail to meet their service obligations will have their scholarships revert to college loans, and will be responsible for full repayment including any accrued interest.
      • The Washington State Achievement Council administers the Future Teachers Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program. This program provides financial assistance to resident students who are working toward their certification as a special education teacher. Award amounts vary, but may not exceed the total cost of tuition at the recipient s college or university. Eligible students must agree to a predetermined term of service teaching in the Washington state school system.

      College Sponsored Scholarships

Hapeman Scholarship and the Teacher Education Scholarship. Award amounts vary, and are determined by course of study and financial need. Interested students may apply through the college s office of financial aid.
      • The College of Education at San Francisco State University offers two scholarships for attending students pursuing a special education related teaching degree. The Dorothy B. Lucas Special Education Scholarship offers up to $2500 to eligible students enrolled in a special education program. The William L. Neer Scholarship awards up to $500 to eligible students enrolled in a special education program with an emphasis on working with the visually impaired.
      • The College of Education at the University of Missouri supports a number undergraduate and graduate scholarships for students working toward their teaching certification. Of interest to special education majors are the John D. Collier Endowed Scholarship and the Jacob M. and Annie D. Cunningham Education Fund which provide financial assistance to students majoring in special education with an emphasis on cognitive and emotional learning difficulties.

      Scholarships from Professional Associations and Charitable Foundations

      Many scholarships for special education majors are supported by charitable foundations, and through professional teachers associations. These scholarships can sometimes be difficult to locate, and will require some work on the part of the interested student.
