Where to Get a Canadian Income Tax Package

Where to get income tax forms

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) used to obligingly just mail you a paper income tax package at the appropriate time, but that s no longer the case. Now you ll have to work just a little harder at getting your hands on one, although it s not difficult.

When it comes time to file your Canadian income tax return, use the income tax package for the province or territory where you resided on December 31 of the tax year.

The tax package includes an information guide, a return form, schedules (more forms), a federal tax worksheet, and a provincial tax worksheet. Here are a few ways to get your hands on a 2016 Canadian income tax package.

Download One Online

Download and print the package from the Canada Revenue Agency s website. Simply click on your province or territory. The forms are in PDF. Deemed residents and non-residents of Canada in 2016 can click on 2016 Income Tax and Benefit Package (for non-residents and deemed residents of Canada). You can also download income tax packages from previous years from the CRA if you re behind with your taxes.

Order a Printed Package Online

Although the CRA no longer mails out paper income tax packages automatically, you can still request that it do so. Select the forms and publications you need on the website and fill in the order form to have the CRA mail you printed copies.

The order form is available starting January 5, 2017, but ordered packages will not be mailed until February 6, 2017. The number of copies you can request are limited, but the limits are particularly generous: up to 99 in some cases, although some forms are limited to 50. If you need just one form but not the whole package, you can do a search for it online.

Order a Tax Package by Phone

Call 800-959-8281 during regular business hours in Canada and the United States to request a package by phone. If you re outside Canada or the U.S., call 613-940-8495. Collect calls should be accepted. Just as if you had ordered the package online, you can do so beginning January 5, 2017, but the CRA will not begin mailing them out until February 6, 2017.

Pick up a Tax Package in Person

The income tax forms and a general guide should be available at postal outlets and Service Canada offices beginning February 6, 2017.

Some Tips

The CRA website also offers free certified tax preparation software if you don t want to fill the forms out by hand. You can also file your completed tax forms online. When you re done, you can track the status of your refund on the website, or even make changes to your return if you discover you made a mistake when preparing it.

How to Get Copies of Your Past Income Tax Returns, where to get income tax

by ,

How to Get Copies or Transcripts of Your IRS Tax Returns

Where to get income tax forms

You can get either exact copies or brief “transcript” of your past U.S. federal tax returns from the IRS.

Typically, you can request copies or transcripts of Tax Forms 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ for up to 6 years after they were filed (after which they are destroyed by law). Copies of other types of tax forms may be available for longer than 6 years.

Exact Copies – $50 Each

You can request an exact copy of a past tax return by using IRS Tax Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return).

Note that you can only order 1 type of tax return per request form, which means you must submit separate Forms 4506 if you need different types of returns. Make sure your full payment (of $50 per copy) is included with your request. Also keep in mind that it may take the IRS up to 75 days to process your request.

Transcripts of Tax Returns – No Charge

For many purposes, you can meet the requirements for past tax returns with a “transcript” – a computer print-out of the information on your old tax return – rather than an exact copy. A transcript may be an acceptable substitute for an exact copy of a return by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and lending agencies for student loans and mortgages.

If you need a statement of your tax account which shows changes that you or the IRS made after the original return was filed, however, you must request a tax account transcript . Both transcripts are generally available for the current and past three years and are provided free of charge. The period in which you will receive the transcript varies from within ten to thirty business days from the time the IRS receives your request for the tax return or tax account transcript.

Why Would You Need Old Tax Returns?

Why do thousands of taxpayers request copies of past returns every year? According to the IRS, there are lots of reasons, including:

  • You Miscalculated: Something as simple as a minor math mistake on a tax form can leave you needing to resolve an issue with the IRS. Typically, you will need to re-file the return to resolve the problem.
  • You Lost the Old Ones: Lots of taxpayers like or need to keep detailed tax records.
  • You Need Proof: Many financial chores, like applying for a loan require proof of your past tax records.
  • You Forgot Some Documents: The IRS might require you to recalculate your taxes is you forgot to attach certain documents. For example, you might need documents proving your deductions or a copy of a W2 form.
  • You Are Filing for Bankruptcy: Let’s hope you never do, but if you are filing for bankruptcy you’ll need copies of your past tax returns. Being able to provide the bankruptcy court with a complete financial history is a top priority in the process.

Note For Taxpayers Trying to Get or Modify a Home Loan

To help taxpayers trying to obtain, modify or refinance a home mortgage, the IRS has created IRS Form 4506T-EZ, Short Form Request for Individual Tax Return Transcript. Transcripts ordered using Form 4506T may also be mailed to a third party, such as a mortgage institution if specified on the form. You must sign and date the form giving your consent for the disclosure. Businesses, partnerships or individuals who need transcript information from other forms, such as Form W-2 or Form 1099, can use Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to obtain the information. These transcripts may also be mailed to a third party if there is consent for the disclosure.

Note For Taxpayers Impacted by Federally Declared Disasters

For taxpayer impacted by a federally declared disaster, the IRS will waive the usual fees and expedite requests for copies of tax returns for people who need them to apply for benefits or to file amended returns claiming disaster-related losses.

For additional information, refer to IRS Tax Topic 107, Tax Relief Disaster Situations, or call the IRS Disaster Assistance Hotline at 866-562-5227.

How do I get an extension to file my PA Income Tax return?

    Answer ID 178 | Published 12/03/2002 12:15 AM | Updated 04/01/2016 12:58 PM

How do I get an extension to file my PA Income Tax return?

If you need more time to prepare your taxes than the deadline permits, you may file for an extension of time by completing an “Application for Extension of Time to File” REV-276 .

If you have an approved extension from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you do not have to file for a state extension unless you want an extension greater than the extension granted by the IRS.

However, please remember that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. If you feel you will owe tax, you should send a payment for the amount of tax you expect to owe. Make sure you record your Social Security number on the check with the notation that you are making an “extension payment” for the tax year.

Mail your extension payment and/or application REV-276 by April 18, 2016 to:

    PA Department of Revenue
    Bureau of Individual Taxes
    P.O. Box 280504
    Harrisburg, PA 17128-0504

If you do not pay the entire tax due, you will be subject to a 5 percent underpayment penalty, plus the interest on the amount not paid by the original due date.

If you would like to pay by ACH debit. extension payments are accepted until midnight on April 18, 2016. Using ACH debit to make your extension payment automatically grants a six month extension to file a PA Personal Income Tax return without filing the form REV-276.

If you would like to pay by credit card. extension payments are accepted until midnight on April 18, 2016. Making a credit card extension payment automatically grants a six month extension to file a PA Personal Income Tax return without filing the form REV-276.

When you file your return, fill in the “Extension” oval (not Amended) on the front of the income tax return. If you applied for a federal extension, attach a copy of Form 4868 to the return. If you electronically filed your federal extension, attach an explanation and the Declaration Control Number you received. If you filed a state extension form, you do not have to attach it.

For federal extensions over six months, in addition to Federal Form 4868, a copy of the letter or form granting the extension must also be attached. No extension will be granted for more than six months unless the taxpayer continues to reside outside the United States.

Individuals who are stationed on active duty in combat or hazardous duty zones, have 180 days from the release date from this duty or release from a hospital, to file any state income tax return that was due while stationed in these zones. A copy of the military orders and a copy of the discharge papers should accompany the return when filed. “COMBAT ZONE” should be written on the top of the return. The return should be mailed to:

    RE: Combat Zone
    PA Department of Revenue
    P.O. Box 280600
    Harrisburg, PA 17128-0600
