Preventing healthcare errors, fraud and abuse is everyone s responsibility!
The Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program is a statewide partnership between community based organizations and mainstream agencies. Our objective is to reach and educate Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, family members, caregivers, and professionals on the importance of being engaged healthcare consumers to prevent healthcare errors, fraud and abuse .

The MA SMP Program is designed to provide education and resources on how to address healthcare errors, fraud and abuse for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, family members, caregivers, and professionals, with a focused effort on reaching limited English proficient, Native Americans and other hard-to-reach populations.

We are all responsible for being involved participants in our own healthcare. If you or someone you know has been subjected to questionable billing practices and/or deceptive marketing tactics related to healthcare, contact the MA SMP Program .

How to Become a Successful Medical Assistant – 3 Surefire Tips

What’s the difference between an ordinary Medical Assistant and an outstanding Medical Assistant?

It’s the little things an MA can do to keep the office operating smoothly.
You see, the more organized an MA is—the easier it is on the entire medical staff.

To help you stay organized, here are three tips to help you become a successful Medical Assistant:

When you put a patient in an exam room, notice why he/she is there and make sure everything the provider will need for that visit is set up and ready to go when the doctor walks in the door. This sounds obvious, but a lot of time is wasted during patient visits when the room is not prepared.

One way to help you anticipate what will be needed is to constantly ask yourself questions. For example:

Does the patient have a cough?
Maybe your provider will need a peak flow.

Is the patient in for a wound check?
Your provider can’t examine the wound unless it is exposed. Have it unwrapped and ready for examination with materials conveniently placed for redressing the wound.

Do you think the patient will need lab tests?
Have the requisition on the chart, with identifying information completed so the provider just needs to add the desired tests and a signature.

Were tests ordered at the last visit? Are they in the chart?
If not call for the results. Don’t wait to be told. Always be thinking ahead.

The more questions you can ask yourself, the more prepared you’ll be.

Do you work in an office with several providers, each with his/her own preferences? It can be frustrating to remember who wants what. So keep a note pad in your pocket to use as a quick reference for preferences and quirks of the providers with whom you work.

Note each provider’s choice for glove sizes, suture setup, wound care, or pelvic exam setup. Note if they want a UA completed before they go in the room for chief complaint of urinary symptoms. It makes a provider’s job much easier when a thoughtful Medical Assistant has everything he needs set up and ready to go.

Illegible penmanship is out. Forget all the old jokes about doctors and sloppy writing. What you write must be accurate and easy to read. Keep your note on the chief complaint short and specific, limited to 3-5 words on what the problem is, times (x) how long. For example; “Ear ache, fever x 3 days.” “Refill blood pressure meds.” “Back pain x 48 hours.” “Follow up sinus infection, Antibiotics x 10 days, doesn’t feel better.” Your provider will fill in the details during the exam.

Correct spelling makes you look smart. Use your pocket note pad to jot down words that are a challenge to you. Remember throats are sore; and birds soar.

Names of medications are often difficult for anyone. One handy pocket sized book that is full of generic and brand names is the Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopia. Highlight the names of medicines you come across and before long you will be spelling them accurately with no problems. If you have a pocket Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Epocrates has a free download of their complete list of generic and name brand medications.

Remember an outstanding MA can make the difference between a smooth running office and a chaotic office.

remember to anticipate your provider’s needs, keep a note pad to help you remember important facts, and make sure to document everything clearly so nobody has trouble understanding what you wrote on the charts.

Tech Today: Microchip Boosts Outlook, Apple Shows HomePod, T-Mo and Sprint

Here are some things going on today in your world of tech :

Shares of computer chip maker Microchip Technologies (MCHP ) are up 97 cents, or 1%, at $85.48, in late trading, after the company after market close narrowed its forecast for its fiscal Q1 ending in June. The company now sees revenue rising 4.5% to 6%, better than its prior view of 2% to 7%. EPS is now seen in a range of $1.22 to $1.26, up from a prior $1.17 to $1.27. That is better than Street consensus for 4% growth and $1.21 per share.

CEO Steve Sanghi said that “while we are adding capacity in numerous areas, we expect that it could take another year for our inventories and lead times to return to more normal levels .

Shares of Apple (AAPL ) are down $1.63, or 1%, at $153.82, after the company this afternoon hosted software developers in San Jose for its annual WWDC conference, where it unveiled something called “HomePod,” a 6.8-inch tall cylinder wrapped in speaker mesh, in black or in white, that features Apple’s “A8” processor. It is the long-awaited competitor to Amazon’s (AMZN ) “Echo” home assistant line.

The company also updated its Mac computers, its MacBook Pro laptop tine, and its iPad tablets, and its mobile, desktop and “WatchOS ” software.

Former Apple analyst Gene Munster. on hand at the event. declares HomePod is a “winner,” though he is still waiting for a major upgrade of the capabilities of Apple’s “Siri ” assistant technology.

Today’s 1.5% decline was just slightly more than the 1.2% average of the last nine years, as Walter Piecyk of BTIG noted this morning .

iPhone expectations too high?

Speaking of Apple, Pacific Crest ‘s Andy Hargreaves cut his rating on the stock to Sector Weight from Overweight, arguing investors’ expectations for Apple’s presumed forthcoming iPhone 8 have gotten out of hand.

The device is unlikely to add as many new users as people expect, especially as those willing to spend more than $800 or more for a phone aren’t that many.

Criteo hit by ad blocking

A casualty of Apple’s event is Criteo (CRTO ), the advertising technology company, whose shares fell $3.88, over 7%, to close at $48.80, as Apple unveiled a function coming in an update to its Safari browser that will block ads from automatically loading in a Web site, as described by Cnet ’s Shara Tibken .

Shares of life sciences cloud software maker Veeva Systems (VEEV ) closed down 98 cents, or 1.5%, at $65.72, after Morgan Stanley’s Stan Zlotsky cut his rating on the shares to Equal Weight from Overweight, but raised his price target to $68 from $53, writing that the 60% jump in the shares this year leaves little upside.

He writes, Veeva’s management team has executed very well since IPO and we expect similar results going forward, as the company penetrates opportunities outside of the core life sciences.

T-Mo, Sprint all-stock deal

Speculation continues about a potential merger of T-Mobile US (TMUS ) and Sprint (S ). Alex Sherman and Scott Moritz with Bloomberg this afternoon report that multiple unnamed sources are telling them that the duo are “in early-stage discussions” about “an all-stock deal that would avoid the need for financing” as one potential option.

Watch WDC and Toshiba

In the ongoing struggle between Toshiba (6502JP ) and its NAND join venture partner Western Digital (WDC ), Mizuho’s Vijay Rakesh today reiterates a Buy rating on Western stock, writing that “we believe June-July will be key months for WDC investors.” That follows Toshiba’s announcement last week that it intends to sort through potential bidders for the bidders for the chip unit and pick just one.

Western CEO Steve Milligan is expected to meet with Toshiba’s president this week. A report today by Nikkei Asia Review said Apple and Amazon are going to support a bid by electronics maker Hon Hai Precision Industry (2317.TW ).

Verizon and Pandora

Following speculation last month that Pandora Media (P ) is intent on selling itself, comes a report yesterday by The New York Post ’s Claire Atkinson stating Verizon Communications (VZ ) is looking to make an investment in Pandora of $100 million if the company is not able to strike a deal with SiriusXM (SIRI ) to buy Pandora, citing multiple unnamed sources. This follows a report two weeks ago by the Post that SiriusXM was holding talks with Pandora about a deal.

eBay’s hidden charms

Shares of eBay (EBAY ) closed up 23 cents, or 0.7%, at $35.55, after Credit Suisse ‘s Paul Bieber took over coverage from colleague Stephen Ju, and raised his rating to Outperform from Neutral, while raising the price target to $44 from $34, arguing investors aren’t giving proper credit to the company’s two big businesses outside of auctions, its classified listings and its StubHub ticket operation, both of which he thinks could someday follow PayPal (PYPL ) to the public markets.

Shares of messaging app-cum-camera company Snap (SNAP ) closed down 88 cents, or 4%, at $20.21, after J.P. Morgan ‘s Doug Anmuth cut estimates. warning the company’s seasonally-sensitive advertising revenue may be hit in Q3 by a lack of Olympics and political ads. Anmuth also lowered figures for how many new users the company may add, and for how many of its Specs sunglasses it may sell.

Alibaba s Jack Ma vows to use government funds to grow small businesses #retail, #technology

Alibaba’s Jack Ma vows to use government funds to grow small businesses

    What is Alibaba?

Chinese tech billionaire Jack Ma has vowed to use financial support from the Victorian state government to grow Australian small businesses as he cut the ribbon on Alibaba’s Australian headquarters.

It’s understood the Daniel Andrews state government has provided a number of “incentives” to Alibaba to set up its Australia-New Zealand headquarters in Melbourne but the ecommerce giant refused to reveal the exact nature of these concessions or the size of the investment.

Mr Ma, who is China’s richest tech boss, with a net worth of about $US28 billion said Alibaba didn’t need the funds from the state government but he promised to use it to help Australian small business grow and expand offshore.

“The government giving money to us, supporting our business, we should be using this money for small business here, training people here,” Mr Ma said.

    Related Article

“In China they say if a company gets money from the government this is a stupid company and we appreciate the generosity of the friendliness of this government and I promise we will use this money in a better way.”

Addressing the lavish launch event audience, which included the Victorian Premier, Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Arthur Sinodinos as well as some of the retail platform’s top-selling retailers such as Chemist Warehouse and Swisse, Mr Ma said said the world was entering “the third technology revolution” and Australian businesses needed to harness the country’s clean water, soil and air to sell products to the world.

He said Australia and New Zealand’s clean environment provided a unique selling point for its businesses and was the “gold mine” for these economies in the next 15 years.

“In the past 30 years through a lack of experience in China we have a terrible polluted environment,” Mr Ma said.

“There’s a lot we should have learned from Australia and New Zealand.”

According to Mr Ma, Alibaba’s platform has the potential to create 100 million jobs worldwide, connect with 2 billion customers and make 10 million small businesses profitable.

The business, which connects consumers to businesses, businesses to businesses and consumers to consumers through its digital platforms has been hugely successful in China, as has its financial services operation, including Alipay, but its bid to transform into a truly global operation has proved more challenging.

Market watchers claim the Australian head office and the high profile launch is as much a public relations exercise as it is way to connect with Australian consumers and businesses.

However, Mr Ma is a compelling speaker and his business success along with his close links to some of the most powerful people in the world ensured a big crowd.

“We believe that globalisation is the future, a lot of people don’t like globalisation today but we are strong believers,” said Mr Ma.

“We are strong believers in trade, we think in the past 20 years globalisation was controlled by 16,000 big companies what if we can help 6 million business do business across boarders?”

He said globalisation was going through “growing pains” and if it could be reshaped into a more inclusive model, it had huge potential.

“In the past 18 years Alibaba focused on working with three global groups: small businesses, young people and women,” Mr Ma said.

“We believe these three groups are the future, it’s the small businesses that are the centre of innovation, it’s the small businesses that creates the most jobs.

“Empower young people using data technology, we believe the world is moving from information technology to data technology. and we believe that women are the most crucial workers.”

Mr Ma said it was a little-known fact that 48 per cent of Alibaba’s workforce was women, including a female chief executive officer and a female chief people executive.

“I believe women care for the world and for other people more than men,” Mr Ma said.

Mr Ma has had the ear of US president Donald Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in recent weeks and he said the Australian leader was very enthusiastic about his vision to build an e-hub in Australia specifically designed to help small businesses to import and export more efficiently.

A day after announcing a $26 million scholarship program with the University of Newcastle. Mr Ma said Alibaba was throwing open its doors to Australia to make it easy “to do business anywhere” for businesses in this part of the world.

“With a local office and expert team, Alibaba Group will help Australian and New Zealand businesses share their world-famous products with billions of customers around the world,” Mr Ma said on Saturday.

“Whether a large company with existing links to China or a mum-and-dad run exporter operating out of a garage, Alibaba Group is here to make it easy to do business.

“Australia will always have a special place in my heart and that’s why I’m so pleased to come back to contribute to supporting Australian businesses to create opportunities and jobs in a country that has meant so much for me.”

The groups’ Australian and New Zealand managing director, Maggie Zhou, said a bricks and mortar headquarters for Alibaba was a “key step” in ensuring Australian businesses had the support and information they needed to succeed in China and the rest of the world.

“Longer term, Alibaba’s vision for the Australia New Zealand region is to build the entire operating infrastructure needed to enable local businesses to expand globally,” Ms Zhou said.

“Alibaba Cloud launched its services in and opened its data centre in late 2016 and there are not more than 1000 bricks and mortar stores accepting Alipay across Australia and New Zealand.

“This is just the start with further growth planned in the areas of cloud payments, digital entertainment and logistics.”

Mr Ma also announced a memorandum of understanding with Australia Post, which he said would strengthen trade opportunities for Australian businesses selling to the millions of shoppers on the Alibaba platform.

The agreement is based on a collaboration between Alibaba and Australia Post to develop the first Australian marketplace in the Lazada e-commerce network in South East Asia.
