Mobile eCommerce Statistics 2017 #e-commerce #purchase #boost #mobile

by ,

Mobile eCommerce Stats in 2017 and the Future

In 2015 mobile traffic, as predicted (based on numerous studies and mobile eCommerce statistics), became just as prevalent as desktop traffic. That’s why we’ve been emphasizing the importance of mobile responsiveness to our clients for years. Now, with more than half of all internet traffic coming from a mobile device, it is extremely important to make sure your website is primed for mobile viewing. As we sit here in 2017, let’s look at the trends that continue to change.

Let us be clear: If you plan on running a successful eCommerce website, or any website, you absolutely must cater to mobile users. Not doing so is simply ignoring a majority of your potential customers.

Not only are significantly more users accessing the web from a tablet or smartphone than a desktop, they are doing so with more eCommerce intent than ever before. During last year’s busy holiday shopping season, a third of all online purchases came from smartphone users. Not even Black Friday was immune to mobile fever, as nearly 40% of sales on the traditionally brick and mortar shopping day came via a mobile device. That’s up almost 10% from the previous year.

The fact is, it’s now statistically much more likely that eCommerce customers will be interacting with your website from a smartphone or tablet than a desktop. Armed with this knowledge, it’s your responsibility to create a shopping experience that appeals to your customers. Mobile shoppers are finicky, and rightfully so. With the highly competitive nature of the eCommerce industry, your customers will not hesitate to buy from your competitors if even the slightest headache arises.

Statistics show that 40% of users will go to the competitor after a bad mobile experience, yet an alarming 84% have experienced difficulty completing a mobile transaction. That is an incredibly high number, and it shows just how great the opportunity is for companies to capitalize on consumer conversion just by creating mobile responsive and user-friendly websites.

Still not convinced? Let these statistics do the talking:

eCommerce Mobile Stats

  • 125 Million U.S. consumers own smartphones
  • 50 million U.S. Consumers own tablets
  • 62% of smartphone users have made a purchase online using their mobile device in the last 6 months
  • One third of all ecommerce purchases during the 2015 holiday season were made on a smartphone.
  • eCommerce dollars now comprise 10% of ALL retail revenue
  • 80% of shoppers used a mobile phone inside of a physical store to either look up product reviews, compare prices or find alternative store locations
  • An estimated 10 Billion Mobile Connected Devices are currently in use

Ignoring these trends in mobile eCommerce (referred to as m-Commerce in the industry) evolution means potentially missing out on more and more profit as these trends continue. Here are some tips to make your website mobile friendly:

  • Your website should be programmed to intuitively adapt to whatever device is accessing it in order to provide the most user-friendly experience
  • Tap-Friendly: make sure all buttons, links and calls to action have the appropriate size and margin to prevent errors.
  • Text Phone Numbers: Make sure all phone numbers are text and not images so users can tap-to-call, or copy and paste the number to share with a friend.
  • Visual Content: Since mobile websites are usually viewed on the go and on much smaller screens, utilizing visual content such as infographics and videos will be preferred over reading lengthy text.
  • Main Navigation: increase padding around menu items so it s easy for the user to read and tap on menu items.
  • Contact Forms: Increase form input fields so it s easy for the user to fill out the form.

Tech Today: Microchip Boosts Outlook, Apple Shows HomePod, T-Mo and Sprint

Here are some things going on today in your world of tech :

Shares of computer chip maker Microchip Technologies (MCHP ) are up 97 cents, or 1%, at $85.48, in late trading, after the company after market close narrowed its forecast for its fiscal Q1 ending in June. The company now sees revenue rising 4.5% to 6%, better than its prior view of 2% to 7%. EPS is now seen in a range of $1.22 to $1.26, up from a prior $1.17 to $1.27. That is better than Street consensus for 4% growth and $1.21 per share.

CEO Steve Sanghi said that “while we are adding capacity in numerous areas, we expect that it could take another year for our inventories and lead times to return to more normal levels .

Shares of Apple (AAPL ) are down $1.63, or 1%, at $153.82, after the company this afternoon hosted software developers in San Jose for its annual WWDC conference, where it unveiled something called “HomePod,” a 6.8-inch tall cylinder wrapped in speaker mesh, in black or in white, that features Apple’s “A8” processor. It is the long-awaited competitor to Amazon’s (AMZN ) “Echo” home assistant line.

The company also updated its Mac computers, its MacBook Pro laptop tine, and its iPad tablets, and its mobile, desktop and “WatchOS ” software.

Former Apple analyst Gene Munster. on hand at the event. declares HomePod is a “winner,” though he is still waiting for a major upgrade of the capabilities of Apple’s “Siri ” assistant technology.

Today’s 1.5% decline was just slightly more than the 1.2% average of the last nine years, as Walter Piecyk of BTIG noted this morning .

iPhone expectations too high?

Speaking of Apple, Pacific Crest ‘s Andy Hargreaves cut his rating on the stock to Sector Weight from Overweight, arguing investors’ expectations for Apple’s presumed forthcoming iPhone 8 have gotten out of hand.

The device is unlikely to add as many new users as people expect, especially as those willing to spend more than $800 or more for a phone aren’t that many.

Criteo hit by ad blocking

A casualty of Apple’s event is Criteo (CRTO ), the advertising technology company, whose shares fell $3.88, over 7%, to close at $48.80, as Apple unveiled a function coming in an update to its Safari browser that will block ads from automatically loading in a Web site, as described by Cnet ’s Shara Tibken .

Shares of life sciences cloud software maker Veeva Systems (VEEV ) closed down 98 cents, or 1.5%, at $65.72, after Morgan Stanley’s Stan Zlotsky cut his rating on the shares to Equal Weight from Overweight, but raised his price target to $68 from $53, writing that the 60% jump in the shares this year leaves little upside.

He writes, Veeva’s management team has executed very well since IPO and we expect similar results going forward, as the company penetrates opportunities outside of the core life sciences.

T-Mo, Sprint all-stock deal

Speculation continues about a potential merger of T-Mobile US (TMUS ) and Sprint (S ). Alex Sherman and Scott Moritz with Bloomberg this afternoon report that multiple unnamed sources are telling them that the duo are “in early-stage discussions” about “an all-stock deal that would avoid the need for financing” as one potential option.

Watch WDC and Toshiba

In the ongoing struggle between Toshiba (6502JP ) and its NAND join venture partner Western Digital (WDC ), Mizuho’s Vijay Rakesh today reiterates a Buy rating on Western stock, writing that “we believe June-July will be key months for WDC investors.” That follows Toshiba’s announcement last week that it intends to sort through potential bidders for the bidders for the chip unit and pick just one.

Western CEO Steve Milligan is expected to meet with Toshiba’s president this week. A report today by Nikkei Asia Review said Apple and Amazon are going to support a bid by electronics maker Hon Hai Precision Industry (2317.TW ).

Verizon and Pandora

Following speculation last month that Pandora Media (P ) is intent on selling itself, comes a report yesterday by The New York Post ’s Claire Atkinson stating Verizon Communications (VZ ) is looking to make an investment in Pandora of $100 million if the company is not able to strike a deal with SiriusXM (SIRI ) to buy Pandora, citing multiple unnamed sources. This follows a report two weeks ago by the Post that SiriusXM was holding talks with Pandora about a deal.

eBay’s hidden charms

Shares of eBay (EBAY ) closed up 23 cents, or 0.7%, at $35.55, after Credit Suisse ‘s Paul Bieber took over coverage from colleague Stephen Ju, and raised his rating to Outperform from Neutral, while raising the price target to $44 from $34, arguing investors aren’t giving proper credit to the company’s two big businesses outside of auctions, its classified listings and its StubHub ticket operation, both of which he thinks could someday follow PayPal (PYPL ) to the public markets.

Shares of messaging app-cum-camera company Snap (SNAP ) closed down 88 cents, or 4%, at $20.21, after J.P. Morgan ‘s Doug Anmuth cut estimates. warning the company’s seasonally-sensitive advertising revenue may be hit in Q3 by a lack of Olympics and political ads. Anmuth also lowered figures for how many new users the company may add, and for how many of its Specs sunglasses it may sell.

What Is Mobile Marketing – Why Does it Matter So Much, WordStream, how much does

by ,

What Is Mobile Marketing Why Does it Matter So Much?

First, a quick definition: Mobile marketing is the art of marketing your business to appeal to mobile device users. When done right, mobile marketing provides customers or potential customers using smartphones with personalized, time- and location-sensitive information so that they can get what they need exactly when they need it, even if they’re on the go.

I would tell you that mobile is the future of marketing, but really the era of mobile has already arrived. If you’re not implementing some kind of mobile marketing strategy, you’re already trailing behind!

As you can see from the graph below, more users are spending larger amounts of time engaged with mobile devices than ever before. We can expect this trend to continue even further in the future, so get ready!

Desktop vs. mobile users in millions

How Does Mobile Marketing Work?

Mobile marketing consists of ads that appear on mobile smartphones, tablets, or other mobile devices. Mobile marketing ad formats, customization, and styles can vary, as many social media platforms, websites, and mobile apps offer their own unique and tailored mobile ad options.

Why You Need a Mobile Marketing Strategy

Your business needs a mobile marketing strategy for the same reason that you need a computer and wi-fi access – this is the age in which we live! Walk around any major city and you’ll find more than just a few folks with faces glued to their smartphone screens. According to recent reports, 40% of users’ internet time is spent on mobile devices, which means simply ignoring the rise of mobile just isn’t an option.

Some other interesting mobile marketing statistics:

  • 80% of mobile device time in spent on apps, with game apps eating up the largest percent of app time
  • People browse 70% more web pages on tablets than smartphones
  • Retail conversion rates are 2.2% on tablets, considerably higher than 0.7% on smartphones, but traditional PC conversion rates are still highest at 3.3%
  • Mobile searches have increased 200% year over year in 2012
  • Mobile is predicted to surpass desktop in 2014

Mobile is here to stay, and if forecasts are correct, it will soon by eclipsing desktop usage. If you don’t have a mobile marketing strategy yet, it’s time to get going!

Types of Mobile Marketing Strategies

There’s a healthy variety of mobile marketing strategies to try. The kind that works best for your business will depend on your industry, target audience, and budget.

App-based marketing: This is mobile advertising involving mobile apps. While 80% of mobile time is spent engaged with apps, you don’t have to create an app yourself to get in on the action. Services like Google AdMob help advertisers create mobile ads that appear within third-party mobile apps.

Facebook also allows advertisers to create ads that are integrated into Facebook’s mobile app. Facebook’s mobile Promoted Post ads integrate so seamlessly with Facebook’s news feed that users often don’t realize they’re looking at ads.

In-game mobile marketing: In-game mobile marketing refers to mobile ads that appear within mobile games, like in the example below. In-game ads can appear as banner pop-ups, full-page image ads or even video ads that appear between loading screens.

Example of an in-game mobile marketing ad

QR codes: QR codes are scanned by users, who are then taken to a specific webpage that the QR code is attached to. QR codes are often aligned with mobile gamification and have an element of mystery to them, since users who scan them don’t always know exactly which rabbit hole they’re jumping down.

Location-based marketing: Location-based mobile ads are ads that appear on mobile devices based upon a user’s location relative to a specific area or business. For example, some advertisers may only want their mobile ads to appear when users are within a 1-mile radius of their business.

Mobile search ads: These are basic Google search ads built for mobile, often featuring extra add-on extensions like click-to-call or maps.

Mobile image ads: Image-based ads designed to appear on mobile devices.

SMS: SMS marketing involves capturing a user’s phone number and sending them text offers. This is considered somewhat passé.

Mobile Marketing: Google AdWords Enhanced Campaigns

On July 12, Google rolled out Enhanced Campaigns for all AdWords users, integrating mobile advertising options with classic online AdWords advertising.

Enhanced Campaigns allow advertisers to manage their AdWords bids across various devices in one single campaign, rather than make separate campaigns for mobile vs. desktop. AdWords advertisers can simply take the Google search ads they already use, and then set bids to adjust for mobile devices. To increase bids for mobile devices, users can set a positive bid adjustment, such as +20%, and vice versa – a bid adjustment of -10% reduces the bid by 10% for mobile devices.

It’s in Google’s best interest to make mobile marketing easy for advertisers – Google generates a hefty amount of revenue from mobile ads.

Google’s Enhanced Campaigns allow for advertisers to manage bids across devices, locations, and time with ease. Some advertisers may choose to bid higher for users on mobile devices who are within a certain range of their store, or may only want to bid on mobile devices during their store’s open hours, and Enhanced Campaigns make that an easy possibility for advertisers.

Google Mobile Ad Extensions

Creating mobile search ads with Google also lets you take advantage of Google’s nifty mobile ad extensions, which include features like:

Mobile Site Links: Mobile site links make it easy for mobile users to jump to specific pages of your site without wandering around. Site links are especially useful in mobile marketing, as it’s much more convenient for users on mobile devices.

Click-to-Call Mobile Ad Extension: The click-to-call extension puts a “call” button directly beneath an ad. Clicking the button automatically generates a business’s phone number on a user’s mobile device.

While this handy ad extension makes it easy for searchers to get in contact with your business and drives users down the conversion funnel, it’s best to only have the click-to-call mobile ad extension appear when your business is open and able to answer the phone.

Google Offers for Mobile: The Google Offers mobile ad extension lets advertisers post a discount offer or coupon beneath their ad. These special offers can capture the attention of users who might otherwise ignore an ad.

Click-to-Download Ad Extension: The click-to-download ad extension is similar to the click-to-call, only instead of generating a phone number, clicking the “download” button takes users to the download page of the advertiser’s pre-selected app.

Local Ad Extensions: Local ad extensions are probably the most important extensions for mobile, considering that 1 in 3 mobile searches have local intent. Considering how many mobile searches are questions looking for a local solution, local mobile marketing needs to be a key aspect of your mobile strategy.

Local mobile marketing extensions often involve a phone number or link to Google Maps.

Mobile Marketing Best Practices

We’re leaving you with some quick mobile marketing tips to make sure you make the most of mobile.

  • Be Clear and Concise: Mobile devices have small screens, which means words should be used sparingly. Cluttered and crowded ads will just drive users to scroll past. When it comes to mobile, it’s best to keep things simple.
  • Optimize for Local: Be sure to remember that 1 in 3 mobile searches have local intent. Users often use mobile devices to complement their immediate worldly interactions – where is the nearest gas station? Is there a nearby coffee shop that has wi-fi? Optimize for local mobile marketing to make sure you are aligning with users’ queries.
  • Consider Your Audience: The type of audience you’re hoping to reach should influence the kind of mobile ads you use. Are they gamers? Then try taking advantage of in-game ads. Are they young and tech-savvy? Mobile Facebook Promoted Posts might be more likely to get their attention.
  • Experiment with Different Strategies: There’s a lot of room for experimentation when it comes to mobile marketing. Don’t be afraid to test out some ad extensions with your AdWords Enhanced Campaigns – try the Google Offers ad extension, or the click-to-call extension, and see how they work for you.
  • Benchmark Your Results: Experimenting is great, but there’s no point in trying new techniques if you’re not tracking your results to see what works and what doesn’t. Try the AdWords Grader to see how your mobile PPC ads are performing.
